Finasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.

Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

This will decrease the chance that you will have more of a low libido, a decrease in the amount of body hair, or that you will have an over the counter addiction medicine such as Adempas. You should always read and follow your healthcare provider's information before you start taking finasteride.

The 5α-reductase is located in the prostate gland. Finasteride is an inhibitor of the 5α-reductase enzyme. Finasteride inhibits the conversion of testosterone into DHT by inhibiting the 5α-reductase. It is effective in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men and male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in women. Inhibiting the 5α-reductase enzyme is a primary mechanism of action of finasteride. It also inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone primarily responsible for male sexual function and male pattern baldness. The 5α-reductase is located in the body. DHT is an important male sex hormone. Finasteride works by reducing levels of the 5α-reductase. It also inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT by inhibiting the 5α-reductase. Lower levels of DHT are associated with a reduction in the duration of sexual activity in men and with an increase in the number of sexual partners in men and women.
